Default Serpentine setup

Hey All,

So I bought a serpentine setup for my 76 from a guy (that I thought) said was from an 84 Vette.

After I brought home my new engine and cleaned up and assembled the pieces of the serpentine setup to the front of the block, I realized that the alternator that it requires is a CS144 and not a CS130? (because of the distance of the 2 bolt holes on the bracket, which is 7.2 inches compared to 6.6 inches)

Is it possible to judge approximately what year this setup came from, so I won't buy the wrong year AC compressor or Alternator.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, looks like an 84 set up. Do you have the 84-up water pump on there?
There's a bracket that goes on top of the water pump that ties it to the lower air pump bolt. This bracket is breaks easily.

There should be part #'s cast on nearly every piece of the accessory drive, the reservoir and that aspect of the drive certainly hint '84.

Post the part #'s.

There are aspects of the drive brackets that look a little unusual. The original 17SI on the '84 shared the 6.6 you expected. Part #'s of your pulleys also might aid in the identification.

There's what appears to be a casting number on the reservoir. What is that?

Looks exactly like the arrangement on my '84, FWIW.

That support looks to be missing maybe.

Forget this - How about you guys measuring the mounting spread on your drives? Do both of you have 17SI or converted to CS130? - Dimension should still be 6.6 that the OP expected I'd think.

OP - are you attempting to retain the AIR pump for a particular reason?

Yes I think. Its what came with the set.

And yes again I broke the little bracket that sits on the water pump.

There is no particular reason why I kept the smog pump. I did gut it though and that wasn't easy!

I thought that an '84 drive the pump could be eliminated and maybe a shorter belt only corrected the drive. Never owned one, no "first hand" but I recall I thought reading - YEARS AGO THOUGH!

**The '84 reservoir was very fragile. Have you checked it? While it's on the floor it might be wise to maybe check and consider a change of the reservoir (done easily to later models) and maybe acquire an '85 upper bracket that I thought made the change to a CS144 easier than some of the later OR use the earlier L98 and the CS130 you've got. It's much easier on the floor than in the C3 I'm sure.

Ditto!

Since you're working on a '76, the metric threads may catch you by surprise. The '84 is a MIX! Those threads in the brackets (a/c, alt., etc.) are metric, but the threads into the block and heads are SAE. The top bolt into the alt. is also metric!

Idler pulley 14055164
Resevoir 14048988
PS pump pulley 14055114
PS bracket 14055113
Water pump pulley 14081087

I do see a trend there...

I looked up some of the numbers and apparently it is from an 84. The alternator is what is throwing me off.

Also, the bolts are very specific. I am finding out that i need the double sided bolts and the exhaust manifold bolts as well...

Live and learn

OP - The 7.2 (or close) dimension could be correct, the Metric 17SI is 89mm center of foot to bearing center so that's 178mm (7.0+). There's not a dimension advertised for center of mount to mount and not many were. In my first post I found a dimension mentioned that matched what you expected but using the correct drive-end frame I can't duplicate that.

This is the correct drive-end frame (1985669)

http://store.alternatorparts.com/sea...x?find=1985669

Water pump pulley looks to be for an '85 - all else '84

I've an '84 only SPO catalog if you need part #'s just ask. I can likely give you some very good images in .pdf. Two of my paper SPO catalogs have been scanned to .pdf and are completely searchable and very legible.
