curious if anyone knows how to fix this?

ive been in and replaced/adjusted the felt covered bumpers.

the windows still rattle bad if the door is closed with window half down.....

is this just kind of normal?

I tried the same fix, with new bumpers and adjusted until my knuckles bled.
Roll the window all the way down or up before closing the door.
Problem solved

That's caused by the design of the window. Since it's curved there is no way to support it in all positions.

what year car? early, nylon ribbon, regulators (84-86) tend to rattle more than the later design. I had this issue with my 85 for years, even with new felt bumpers. maybe it was just worn out, but I seemed to have a lot of slop or play in the guide mechanism. this allowed everything to flop around inside the door. I converted my PW over to the later design - problem solved.

its a 93

i even put in a new gm 'regulator' and it solved nothing (there was some other reason i did that).

needless to say, the car doesnt sound solid or 'tight' when closing the door with window half down

its annoying

There is foam rubber between the door and the regulator in 3 areas
It. Gets old and falls off
If u remove the reg from the door u can replace the foam
And it will fix the rattle

its the window glass banging against the fiberglass door frame

Whaat?!? No kidding. This needs to be in the Tech section. Well then, nobody ever looks at the stickys or searches so sticking under their noses will have little effect....

Thanks Dt. Great find.

Naturally that design is not without fault lol. The plastic guides can break. I used fiberglass matt and epoxy to strengthen mine. I have photos in my tear down thread if anyone's interested.

Visual inspection seems to reveal that support for window glass (in any position besides all the way up or down) falls primarily upon the window sweeps on the inside and outside. Unfortunately, this doesn't work very well.

The sweeps don't offer any support but there are felt guides that the glass rides against.

I don't have my door apart at this time. Are the guides on both sides of the glass ??? I didnt think they were but i cant remember. One thing is for sure, the sweeps provide little support. I had mine apart to fix a constant rattle that came from the lock linkage rod and I remember looking at it because my window rattles too. So it was all the way up or all the way down for me.

No the guides are only on the inside. There are two per door.

Yeah that's what I thought. So it only supports (stabilizes) the window in the one direction. I was hoping you were going to say there is one on each side, then I would know that one is missing in my door.

If I recall it might actually press against the outer door sweep. Not the flimsy rubber, but against the base of it. I think it's felt lined. It's been a while since I had mine apart.
