I took my 91 on a short road trip today. After about an hour I stopped for gas and it wouldn't start (power to everything but no crank, not even a click from the solenoid). After setting for a half hour or so it started ok.
It has done the same thing four times. Last year, when it did it, I changed the starter disable relay, neutral safety switch, and cleaned the battery terminals and cables(both ends). Since it starts after it cools down could the starter be bad?
Any help appreciated.
Bob
I would clean and tighten battery connections both ends and all main grounds. And load test the battery.
Just did that last fall. Wouldn't think I'd have to do it twice a year. I did pull the cables off the battery when it happened yesterday. They were clean and tight.

Did you take the battery bolts out and clean under them?
Don't know for sure but I assume it's OE/GM. I have the maint. records no indication of a starter change.
The first thing you do is have the electrical/battery "load tested" - assume nothing! Battery is nearly a year older! I'd say it's time for a "tune-up" of the starter if it's OE/GM. I would NOT buy an off the shelf anything to replace it. Contacts and a plunger will likely do the starter, brushes? Maybe.
For a '91 you "might" consider a modification of the Starter Enable Relay circuit. It's done by many/most for the start issues you mention.
