tried putting this in tiday on my 94. thought it was going to take 5 minutes lol. first of all i cant even get my hands in there to reach what i thought was it. it was the plug on top drivers side at the front of the tranny. i disconnected it and figured i would try it before installing new plug. i took it for a ride and it still wont let me go from 1st to 2nd when light is on. could it be wrong plug or does the cags eliminator have to be installed? i didnt think it did?
If it is disconnected it will not function, so you probably disconnected something else.
The skip shift light will still come on, but will not function when it is disconnected. (On a '96 due to OBD2 simply disconnecting it will set a check engine code too which is why you need an eliminator part which is a resistor, or tune it out.) On '89 to '95 simply unplugging it will not set a code but the skip shift light will come on but the transmission will work normally. On the '89 to '96 an eliminator is simply to keep the connectors plugged so they don't corrode etc.
Here is a sketch to show the location of the skip shift solenoid and the connector.

You mention a "difficult/hard" reach so maybe you were actually after the B/U light switch that's way high on the left side and forward of the CAGS. If you've not been back up there yet see if you have B/U lights.
This thread has some very good images of the ZF. Snapshot #3 B/U is the black and the CAGS has already been pointed out.

Good luck.
there is a plug that does not go right into the trans but is outside of it, can this be the one i need?
yep it was the one that goes into the selenoid and not the trans. now it shifts whenever i want to in 2nd. thanks for all the help from you guys. bailed me out again. great forum
I plan to disconnect mine at some point but in the mean time I find that when it activates if I pause for a second in the center of the shifter travel I can shift into third with no problem, its less of a jump in ratio.
