It has the same amber outside rear turn signal lights and rear lower 21 watt fog light that I had to add/change on my 87 when I took it over to England.
With that kind of VIN it might have been a car that went overseas (EX = export) but they kept the steering on the left. I don't see anything "prototype" about it. It looks to be in good shape and I don't think that price is bad.
Here's some pics of another ZR-1 test car ('86 coupe) that was sent to England. This one also escaped the crusher and it was shown at the 50th Anniversary celebration at the NCM in Bowling Green. The car was restored to look like it was during the testing period.

Now that would be something to get your hands on. I wonder what happened to the rear bumper on the pass. side.
vettedaddy in the ZR1 section probably knows if its legit or not he restored the 89 that was crushed Id look him up
I dont see any hydraulics or anything else...eng stamp ?????
Be good to investigate. Not sure if those deemed for the crusher could be registered to drive in US?!

The guy in the pic that is bending over the car was the owner. I remember talking to him and he said he wanted to preserve the car as it was during the testing. IIRC, that bent-in lower quarter was deliberately saved that way.
I also remember him saying that GM tried to keep him from buying the car when it was sitting in an English wrecking yard. GM wanted the car so that it could be destroyed. He did get to buy it and started a restoration that took a number of years to do.
Hes a lucky guy from what I understand they drive whats a giant spear right through the motor. GM didnt want those cars out at all
Lots of info on all of them through the zr1 sec here, guys that were key in its development etc. Even more on the zr1net registry (didnt put the link not sure its allowed). History on how those cars came to be was unreal GM spent UNREAL amounts trying to get it right, the LT5 at least they werent having the best luck.
That was one expensive program.
I believe the have the tech to do it today curious to see how this mid engine deal works out. 4v is the way to go so easy to make power on them look at Ford...
Chevy had a 500hp version of the LT5 ready to go but it wouldnt fit under the C5 hood and would put a hurtin on the LSx intro. Anyone who has driven an early LS1....will quickly forget about it. Beat the living hell out of an 03 vert 6 spd and was disappointed. Power was linear and sneaky but powerband WAY too flat for me no "ooh there it is" feel to it at all. The throttle response of drive by wire is horrible. My 02 truck is like a basketball...my 90 454 TBI is instant. Go figure.

I have an old Corvette magazine that did an article on that '86 ZR-1 prototype. I didn't know GM was working on the ZR-1 that far in advance until I read the article. The TPI engine was still fairly new at that time and getting good reviews. It was an interesting read.
It may have been one of the cars that was crushed. If that's the case the car has no VIN plate. The scrap yard that did the crushing in GB removed all the VIN plates and sent them to a friend of mine at the Warren Tech Center. He kept them in his desk before he retired.
This means it's almost impossible to know if one of the crushed cars is real. As my friend said "You can claim anything you want but we have the ViN plates and they're staying with GM."
BTW - Tom Falconer is a real stand up guy so I seriously doubt that this is a scam. This is real. If indeed Tom is the seller.
