Default smoke inside - help

hey everyone

This was a little troubling to say the least - I took advantage of an opening in my schedule and a dry 45 degree day - to take the car ('85 standard 4+3) for a drive. I had not tested the heater and defrost out really until today either - while on the freeway with the heat on - I noticed the windows were fogging up - so I cracked them open to clear them and turned the heat off

- I did not think too much about it until I got home and noticed smoke coming in the back around the hatch and the car was filling up as well I shut everything off, opened everything up to air it out - but- I have no idea why it started to do that - I had not noticed it before and it seemed to be running fine - last time I checked smoke in the car is bad
I am supposed to be driving it again this week to show some friends the car - but this concerns me a lot

any thoughts or suggestions on what this might be ?

Sure it is not steam from the heater core? Feel the pass side carpet up top and pull it back and feel and smell.

I am not - but there was a lot of smoke - The problem was when I got out in the garage - the car had been running a little while in the garage so I may had been smelling that

steam from the heater core - does that mean a leak?

If its the heater core and you can't have it repaired quickly, pull off the in and out heater rubber tubing at the firewall and install a "U" tube bypassing the core. You can find the tubing at a good auto store or make it yourself from copper tubing if you know how to bend it.

Good luck with it.

Yeah, no getting around it, the only permanent fix is replacement. Bypass works, but no heater.

does anyone remember off hand the hose size?

I think I am going to do the bypass for now - maybe do the replacement when the silly season settles down

You could try a bottle of stop leak. Couldn't hurt and might buy you some time. Only $6.00.

If it's the heater core, your windows will be covered with a film of antifreeze. If it was actual smoke......no film. but sounds like mist from the heater core.

i dont recommend this route.

it wasnt hard, but its not easy. ife you find threads on here showing how to do it then u will be fine.

but u have to take the passenger seat out and lay in the floor with your legs up into the hatch area.

it sounds crazy i know. and once u do it once u can do it again in 1 hr.

u will need a basic 1/4 socket set with extensions and swivels.

if u r big or stiff its probably not the best job to try.

local vette specialty shop charges $650 for the job

Stop Leak often starts a whole different problem as it stops coolant flow in places you want it.

I did my heater core years ago and I know what is involved. Just providing an alternative.

And that's why GM uses their version of Alumaseal in every LS motor they release.
