Default Ball joints shot

My ball joints are completely shot and need to be replaced. upper and lower.

This is a toy car, got it cheap as a potential project car. Just wondering what kind of cost I'd expect a garage to charge me for this, or if I should just try to tackle it myself.

They can be done yourself, parts are not much. Check rockauto.com.

Can borrow ball joint service kit from Oreillys or Autozone, probably others.

That's my plan in the next couple of weeks.

The uppers are pretty easy compared to the lowers. I never have done lowers before and mine needed to be done on my 94. I did them a couple weeks ago and it wasn't as bad as I was imaging.
The ball joints ran me about $60 and then I borrowed the removal tool from advance auto. Make sure you borrow the one with more pcs in the kit. The hardest part was keeping the ball joint straight as you are pressing it in. I actually used my bench grinder to smooth the edge that goes in first, they went in alot easier. Did both of mine in about 4 hours.

If you are mechanically inclined and have somewhere to do the work, it is not that hard of a job. I suggest you invest in a Ball joint press or find somewhere that will rent you one. You will also want a 'puller' to separate the ball joint(s) from the spindle.

Best of luck with it.

I have a 1986 coupe. Could the ball joints be bad even if car drives straight? What is the best way to check the ball joints??

Thanks...

You could put floor jack under lower a arm lift tire 2" off floor, put long bar under tire and have someone watch lower ball joint while you try to move tire up and inward, while on jack grab top of tire and move in and out while useing bar under tire have someone watch upper ball joint or have alignment shop check them.

Also check the grease fitting on the lower ball joint, for stocks this indicates when wear has gotten far enough it should be replaced.

Might be able to squeeze under the car and see, but I would jack and remove front wheels.
