Default Rear Wheel Bear Question?

I have a 1992 Roadster, I just had all the U-joints on both half shatfs replaced on friday because of a knocking from what I thought was my drivers side rear tire. Well $400.00 later the knocking is still there.

The dealer said that I need new rear bearing assemblies. This is what I thought it was in the begining, From reading some other posts around here. And this guy wants almost $1000.00 to do them.

So my Question is are they that difficult to do? Is it something I could do in my driveway? If anyone could shed some light on this for me it would be of great help.

The dealer wanted $345.00 each for the wheel bearing, I found them in MAD for $249.00 for AC Delco and $159.00 For a no name. Has anyone purchased either of these, is one better than the other?

Thanks for any help
Scott

Post this in tech to get better answers. Rear wheel bearings are $129.99 at Pepboys with a lifetime warranty. No way in hell should you pay $1000 for this job. They are not hard to change yourself.

You might check Advance and Autozone. I think I bought mine for less than $100 ea. I changed mine about a year ago and it wasn't that hard. Just keep everything clean and remember to block the car up so that it doesn't fall. :chevy :chevy

You'll need a 36 mm socket for the spindle nuts (164 lb. ft.), T-55 torx for the bearing/hub mounting bolts (66 lb. ft.) and 18 mm socket for the brake caliper mounting bolts (70 lb. ft.). Remember to clean the rust from the splines on the rear axle spindles and apply a lubricant to them Someone on the forum said GM has a lubricant that's good to use, I used permatex anti-seize. If you have the time, clean the rear axle speed sensors.

Good luck.

I agree with Scorp. Go to PepBoys and get their bearings. Open the box and pull the bearing out. If it has "NDH" New Departure Hyatt stamped on it somewhere, then it is the GM OEM bearing. NDH was the OEM supplier to GM for Corvette bearings so it's the same as an AC-Delco without the pretty $100 box.
