That wire is a temperature sensor that tells the ECM that the EGR is actually flowing exhaust gas as commanded. I followed the wire back in the loom behind the distributor and unplugged it. Don't cut it, they are getting scarce and bring good money, even used.
Thank you! Since there is no exhaust flowing through that pipe any more, there is no exhaust temperature to measure. I'll suggest that it, and that piece of pipe, be removed and the block-off plate be put onto the manifold instead of the end of that pipe.
On most of these cars the egr will have to be eliminated because you can't buy the solinoids or the temp sensors any longer.. You will have no choice......WW
I have been reconsidering deleting bothe the EGR and the AIR. Everything on the car seems to work. I was planning on doing it to reduce clutter and make it easier to work on but now i am thinking of leaving it in there. However i did buy a chip burnt with it all deleted and hate to waste that money
where did you get your chip .. I need one for a good price

TPIS in Chaska MN. They have a website
After i reviewed how much i paid for the chip i decided i should use it. I dont want to say exactlly but PM me if you want to know.
I like that the VATS is gone, thats one thing i would want out.
I am not sure if i could have had the OD switched to complete manual but that would have been one nice thing
I am deleting the EGR. I can find the EGR block off plate but i dont see one for the heat tube at the rear of the manifold. Are these available?
Hello Bwbob, I to am also deleting my EGR, did you ever find a way to cap off the the opening coming out of the exhaust manifold ?, all they talk about on this thread is the block off plate at the intake manifold which you can buy or can be made.

Needs to be welded shut if keeping factory style manifolds.
Most of us delete it when the headers we buy don't have an opening for the EGR pipe.
I am planning on keeping my stock manifolds so my plan is to cut that tube off the manifold and weld it shut, along with the AIR ports since i deleted that as well
Actually i was hoing to find a set already welded shut and keep my parts “just in case” but since i have half a garage full of stuff like that.
Some on this forum make good points about non deleting these, and if my long term plans for this car were different i would leave them on. But since my chip burn had them deleted already i continue to move in that direction. EGR is not a bad thng and the valves seem to survive along with less vaccuum issues on these later 80’s cars than previous ones. When i was working as a mechanic every car from the 70’s had EGR issues, carb issues, and vaccuum issues. I believe thats why the “remove it” menality is so strong
