Believe it or not, I bought a quart of premix from oreilly's auto parts. No paint shop in town had semi gloss clear besides the SEM stuff. I already had the back base coat and just needed the top clear and the one paint shop only put the SEM stuff in aerosol cans, I wanted to use my hvlp gun. It's close to a year now and it still looks great.

I thought you painted the semi gloss directly on to the black plastic. What brand of black base did you use?
You could use the semi gloss right over the plastic. I had painted my dash pieces body color to see how it looked. I baked the clear coat after I put it on and the plastic outgassed and bubbles the clear. I had to have it sand blasted , so I painted it black , it was wanda base color.
Steps were:
Sandblast
Plastic primer
Base coat
Clear coat
Wow I just started the stripping of this crap coating - it's a long process isn't it - just to strip the ash tray door took an hour - isn't there anything quicker - I don't have access to a bead blaster.
I soaked mine in Purple Power, same as Castrol Super Clean from Autozone. Its a water base degreaser. Cheap and very useful. Just soaked it and it pealed right off.
Right out of the bottle. Its water based so it has no effect on plastic. It really dries our your hands but a little hand cream takes care of that. I use this stuff for everything. Cleans oil from concrete and that's hard to do.
Non acetone nail polish remover. Put it in a spray bottle, spray the surface, watch the dulso crinkle up, wipe down with a paper towel. Make sure it's acetone free though. Otherwise it'll attack the plastic. Easy peasy. Takes no time to do that way
Well I tried the nail polish removal - sucked, tried the purple power - ha waste of time - ended up sanding the crap off since I have no access to a bead blaster - which I think would be the only idea way to go - just a guess. So I sanded this sh&$ off and will paint tomorrow - having a couple stiff drinks to relax from today's BS.

several years ago, I refinished the center console on my 96 and initiated a couple threads. not sure why the nail polish remover didn't work...
