It amazes me that no one knows how to actually repair anything anymore. They only know how to replace.
With the technology we have, it may be cheaper to replace as opposed to diagnostic and repair.

Whether a TV or car engine, it's quicker and easier to replace one than repair it. Talent to do those repairs is being lost, a little more each day.

Mechanization wiped out the unfit people from the standpoint that if you were a low to slightly above average engine builder, you went out of business. So there will be 2 classes. The average build which is done at a warehouse and the highly talented that are like a Lingenfelter that have a sub-culture to cater to.

as long as folks are talking repair in car or even out, lets not forget those lovable expansion/freeze plugs and cam bearings.

Even if your oil looked fine guarantee those bearings have seen coolant with 170k tear it down or order a crate , its time.

Doesnt have to cost a fortune unless you are power hunting
Far as value from external looks dont
Its a C4 with lots of miles no matter how nice it is....the real value is putting something in youll be happy with.

There are two schools of thought here.

1. Rebuild, restore, and modify

2. Put the car back in the same condition before the head gasket.

The OP has a car that before the head gasket was worth $5k-$7k realistically. Replacing the head gaskets for $1k would get him back there. Rebuilding or replacing the engine for $4k-$5k would get him there too (maybe another $1k). The old maxim of worn out at 100k and valve jobs every 50k went out with Reagan and carburetors. Except for head gaskets, the L98s are good for 250k+. Putting a 20 year old heart in an 75 year old, doesn't make him 20 years old (or 60 for that matter).

Gen I engines can be found all over the place. If you have all tools needed to do an engine build up, go for it.

There is no more satisfaction than to DIY your own power plant.

Perhaps the lure of cheapie junk crates on ebay makes it hard for anyone to make a buck.
Guy Ive used for well over 20yrs threw in the towel, had lots of word of mouth guys but got sick of the "this ebay ad says I can get more for less" internet know it alls etc

Different paradigm. Way back when, you can get a decent living with a HS diploma. Grandpa was an accountant for a small firm. Today, NFW with 3 years of HS.

If you were old enough to shave in grade school, you might be a redneck.

Totally!

Driving my car after putting what i feel like was my heart and soul into the engine and drive train, gives me warm fuzziness.
