While browsing info on my 1988 I found this on the GM Recall Website. I called the local Chevy dealer and he said it will not pull up on his system as to what is supposed to be remedied. Anyone know what this is about.
GM Recall #:
N900020
Date Issued:
Mar 01, 1990
Recall Title:
REAR WHEEL TIE RODS Recall Status: INCOMPLETE
It seems there was a recall in 1990 for the rear tie rods and this particular car never got done and there is a record of that still outstanding. Chevrolet dealer doesn't have the records back that far. Maybe if you post a thread like "1988 rear tie rod recall" some original owners or guys with heavily documented cars can shed light on what was done with the recall or needs to be done on that car
It is interesting. There is text in that recall notice that states that the service has to be done REGARDLESS of time or ownership. Since there is no expiration deadline, there is probably a very good case of having the work done.
That language about not releasing the vehicle is kind of scary. So if you went in for an oil change they wouldn't give it back until they got parts and did the recall?
Reminds me of the Ford cruise control recall for cars bursting into flames. If you had the car in for service they disabled the cruise while they figured out a fix.
I took the time to view the actual GM bulletin as it appears today for dealer service departments. I could not pull the bulletin using the number you listed, just did a general search using year, make, model and found with little trouble. The bulletin states, in general, for the technician to inspect the nuts for torque specs. If the torque is not within specs, the dealer is to then replace the tie rod due to potential fracture.
The part number listed in the bulletin to perform the recall has been changed and discontinued, and no longer available for a dealership to order from GM. If anything, a dealership should be able to perform the inspection for you.
More then likely the parts are not available anymore, and dealership on recall won't use aftermarket.
My 1989 had seat belt safety recall, lucky for me, they found the correct color for my Corvette, otherwise it would be any color they found.

I made an appointment at a local Chevy dealer. I emailed them a copy of the recall notice from Corvette Action Center. After sitting in the waiting room for an hour they came out and told me they did not have the old specialty tools any more to do the check. I don't know why they didn't check that before they made the appointment. I called another dealer locally and the service rep their needs a new job washing stalls somewhere. Very unfriendly. Anyway I called the Chevrolet hot line and am waiting for them to call me back. Not sure if they can do anything but worth a try..
