I am going to get a set of long tube headers for my 1996....but not SW or ARH. They are too much money and I do not need the extra pipes (ie: x-pipe, etc) they provide.
That being said I'd like to target Melrose and E&M (exotic muscle) or any other "mid-tier/priced headers you guys recommend.
a couple of things, I plan on getting the PCM tuned, ditching the emissions and corrected for my gear change. Do I get off-road pipes or emissioned pipes (plug the emission fittings in the future)?
Fitment is important as I do not want to **** off my mechanic and spend extra labor money on banging them in (ie OBX).
Sell the car and update to a newer model (C5 or C6).
Maybe you need to hang out in C5 or C6 and stop crapping on the C4 lawn. Some of us might like to hear an intelligent response to a legitimate question.
Put Melrose LT's on several years ago and still like them. Had an issue with the Random pipes they also sold at the time and they were more than helpful with the issue.
As for the fit of the LT's, I would have to say they are excellent and if installing using a lift it is easy.
Melrose headers fit very well, all things considered. Don't get their exhaust package though as it doesn't fit at all. I have a set of ceramic coated long tubes on my 96 LT4 without AIR. I had to do a little grinding/modification to the alternator/ac condensor mounting brackets to get everything to fit which wasn't bad at all. I also ended up cutting out the old cat bracket on drivers side. I remember their was a little trouble there, and it may have worked if I kept trying but I said to hell with it and cut it out. I did the entire install in one afternoon by myself, using jack stands. I'm no Mr. Goodwrench but I got the job done relatively pain free.
I'm not offended, but I feel your answer has nothing to do with my question.
Besides, I like C4, its more of a muscle car and the people are cool....
If I bought a C5 or 6, then I'd have to become a pretentious, Ferrari wanna be owner...

You asked for Any recommendations. Prices are dropping on early C5's. I know, you want it to sound cool. Don't have to tell me all about it. Got about $1,800 into a CAI and Corsa Cat-back on the sedan. How much HP increase? Maybe 10 to 15.
I'd recommend just getting a Corsa Cat-back and be done with it.

Back to the topic at hand here:
I've seen two or three LT1s & 4s at car shows that had Melrose headers on them and they all looked like they were really made for the car rather than adapted like many other brands. The owners all said they were no problem to install and the fit with the rest of the exhaust was perfect. Those are the headers I'm saving up for as soon as I get a few pesky issues out of the way first. (You know, it's always something)

The thing I like about my TPIS for the L98 is that other than the starter, it is easy to get at plugs for maintenance once you order it without the emissions crap. As for the starter, if you are only jacking the front off the ground, it is harder to get leverage to install it. With a lift, no issues.
I don't think tuning will help that much with engine performance at that level if all you are doing is headers. Personally, I don't know if I would want a "guess a tune" to be installed. For gear change and nothing else, sure. Otherwise a dyno tune probably would be a waste of money. My $0.02

The reason for a tune would be for pulling all the emissions stuff off and changing the rear from 2.59 to 3.07...for speedo reasons I might speed match with another car...unless I can just change the speedo gear.

1) c5's are a joke arent they?...other than the LS1 its a Cavalier with a big motor and suspension (same window switches, same seat switches, same stereo, same climate control switches ect ect ect you get my point...not to mention ugly design
2) there's nothing "wrong" with a late model C4
3) maybe not all of us can afford a $25k toy?
Now my next car will be a C6 so i cant argue that but to assume C4's are bad because there's 3 later generations is pretty darn ignorant but i suppose even the corvette forums (maybe "especially" the corvette forums) there's people that always need the newest, biggest, brightest toy...possibly lacking in other areas of their life or dare i say anatomy?
anyways the Op was asking an honest question and deserved an honest response, not some tool with tiny genitals trying to get his daily quota of belittling.
sorry op...i came here because i'm going to do that to my 95 at some point, thought i'd get some solid info but guess not
