The key fob is a transmitter that unlocks the car when it is brought within range. Sometimes moving it around helps. If you leave the key in the ignition, the automatic function is diabled and the car won't lock. BUT, if you lay your keys on the console and close the door, it will lock after a few minutes. What happens the fob goes "to sleep" and quits transmitting and this is the same as moving it out of range. (this keeps it from draining its battery) Sometimes you can rock the car and "wake" the fob, but not always. This is when you need another fob or a door key handy. I had to call my bride to come 35 miles one time to bring her set.
The fob can be set to not work automatically and you would have to press the buttons. Or it can be set to open either the drivers door or both doors. The manual tells how to set or reset the fobs. If isn't like you want, just play with the directions to reset.
Have fun and keep waving. :seeya
I gave up on my PKE. It's a nuisance. The fob sits in a drawer in my kitchen.
Without the fob: Open the door, get out of the car. Lock the doors using the driver's power lock switch, and the security system is armed. As long as the system is armed, you cannot open the door without setting off the alarm and disabling the engine. This includes reaching into a car with a rolled-down window and unlocking the car again with the power door switch. Only the key in the lock or the fob can disarm the system.
With the fob: Get out of the car. Shut the door. Walk away. The default setting locks the doors, honks the horn, and enables the system when you move out of range. To disable, just approach to within 7-15 feet of the door while carrying the fob. It should unlock itself in default mode.
The range varies depending on battery life and on how you hold the fob. Experiment. Holding the fob up vertically (Keys dangling) improves range in my experience.
It's really simple, get close to the car with the keychain and it unlocks. If you walk away, it locks and turns on alarm. If you push the hatch button on the keyfob, it opens the hatch. If you push the door, it unlocks the door.
Security system:
I have an after market system Viper and the factory system.
The remote unlocks the car or locks it and sets the alarm. Simply walking away from the car does nothing. If the battery gets weak in the remote you can lock the car but you can't deactivate it.
The system is more trouble than its worth.
I don't use it at all. Sometimes its works against you!
The chip in the key can also be a problem in the older cars. if your car wont turn over try the spare key.
Congrats on your roadster.
