C4 running problem

C4 running problem
When starting cold, my LT1 runs great, after 30 min of driving it either quits or throves black smoke.
One strange thing, The coolant digital read out bounces fro 170 to 350 and I can hardly keep it running, have to let it cool down and then it's just fine again, sometimes I am Ok for a 20 minute ride, but when I get back into it after sitting awhile the temp digital gauge fluctuates, while the temp gauge is steady,HELP?
