NOISE when starting
1995 vette. After sitting for 3 to 5 days, when I start up the vette, there is a horrible grinding sound which lasts about 1/2 a second. It sounds like its coming from the left front of the engine compartment. After I start it, it never does again unless it sits for a few days. I've unplugged the air pump and the head light motors, but it still does it. Anyone have any ideas?

Found this old thread. Something like this just happened to me yesterday. Went to start the car and bang bang! Startled the crap outta me. I started the car several more times over the course of a 30-40 minutes, never heard it again.
Power steering pump? That is a crazy sounding cause I would never have suspected. What is going on when that noise occurs? TIA.

I had that same noise on both my old 89 and my 92 I currently own. On both I found the AC clutch sitting on the frame rail. On my 92 the AC was working when I bought it. Now it obviously doesn't, but I am tempted to try and reinstall that clutch. Anyways, check to see if your AC clutch is still there.

AC clutch is where it should be. Anyone have a thought on how / why the PS pump could make such a noise? I am curious about that. I started the car last night after sitting for >24 hours, no noise ...
