That's awful any way you look at it. The article mentions that he may have heard the tree coming down so he got lower in the car. If he knew the tree was falling, why not move the car forward or backwards, getting out of the path of the tree in the first place? Now this is just armchair quarterbacking here, but wouldn't it take longer to get low in the car rather than just put it in gear and mash the throttle? I've never tried to get low or lay down in any of my Corvettes but I can't imagine that it would be an easy task. Who knows, maybe it was coming down and the engine was off and he reacted quickly by trying to slide low under the steering column.
