The rear struts on my 96 base were only opening the back hatch maybe 8" when the button was hit. I ordered new struts off ebay 2 days ago. Yesterday I had the hatch open and saw the two top hinges. I thought I would oil them. I used motorcycle chain lube that goes in like a penetrating oil and then dries to a tough grease. Today I hit the button and it shot up all the way. Oh well, maybe I can sell them. I am too quick to buy parts. Dan
Ok, I stand corrected again. I installed the new struts and it is almost scary how fast it goes up now. Very high quality for like $39.00 free shipping. Way harder to close now. It will sure be easier to put stuff in the rear now. Dan

Thread resurrection.
Thanks for this post, Dan. My rear hatch was open for hours and the struts disconnected while I clumsily replaced the hatch weatherstrip. After that, the hatch didn't open very well. Would go up 6-8" then sort of stick. It would go all the way up with just a little encouragement. I figured the struts had just crapped out. I was on the verge of purchasing replacements when I stumbled on to this old thread. Lubricated hinges. Function back to normal.

Great news! Thank you for taking the time to thank me! Dan
