Ok I'm gonna suck it up, shrink 12 inches & ask the most retarded question in the history of the CF. I've noticed many members have cut their lids as a mod to allow for freer air flow. Here's the question: doesn't this cause extra dirt to get in around the air filter? I wonder how godd this is for daily driving. Ok now I'm ready for the onslaught! :jester
X-actly why I don't live in California   ...Just had to throw that in...they just dumped emission testing in Florida a few years back. :seeya

Remember the only realy dumb question is the one unasked. The stock C4 GM lid was designed to satisfy an internal GM standard that requires any of the General's cars to be able to drive unafected through (I think) 6" of standing water while the front end is hosed down with a monsoon level rain.
These are not exactly the conditions that most of us drive in. The K&N Cut Lid (or a home made unit) really doesn't have any affect on the driving rain problem. It could however cause problem with the GM standing water standard however. BTW, the car does run ever so slightly stronger with the K&N cut lid due to less restriction.

P.S. You now know much more than you ever wanted to know about this topic.
Some have used K&N and K&N claims HP gains, but do they really? Nobody can truly answer that unless they have tested at a track under the same exact conditions.
I kept track of the hwy fuel mileage on my van all summer long, w/ and w/o the air on and the comparison I made with the K&N was w/o the air conditioning on. I was able to get 13 mpg hwy w/ a paper filter. I installed the K&N and under similar testing conditions I gained NADA! I still get 13 mpg! If the K&N gives you nothing then the cut lid will just make it sound  that's about it. I bought the Vette with a K&N already installed so no testing done there.
Yeah. I want to know if anyone is getting more mpg's with the K&n and the cut?? Us automatic people get terrible mileage. I would ask for a pic of the cut lid but I am sure i will see enough a the NCM in June.
You may NOT see many cut lids at the NCM..........I have mine cut and it's not visible. I can FEEL it but I better not see anyone getting in there close enough to be able to tell............. know what I mean? :seeya
I cut the lid the other day. THOUGH I left it stock looking. Removed pop rivets, cut the plastic underneath larger and cut a big rectangle in the metal piece. Then put some pop rivets back on, looks very stock. Did it increase performance? I doubt it. Can now say I've cut the lid? :yesnod:
PS, I've HEARD that the cut lid only really makes a difference at higher speeds. Port and polish your MAF if you want less restricted air. It's the stealthiest mod you can do, and it feels stronger afterward. Remember, every little bit helps. Maybe the cut lid will give you 2 HP, 1ft/lb BUT if you think about it, any number can be divided by two. You can port and polish your heads, let's say that gives you 50 HP. Well 25 free mods with 2 HP gains will equal that. 2 HP is 2 HP, and as always, more is better. Marginal increases are still increases. Just some food for thought.
Could someone please tell me some detailed instructions on how to do this? I would really apreciate it! I think that i could do it if it doesnt require any real sophisticated tools.
No extra dirt gets in around mine...its a tight fit on mine...although I didn't cut mine...I just bought another one already done and if I want to go back to stock I dont have to buy a new one...cause I now have the old one...go figure!...pay now save later... :D
