Default Hood latch back-up

I have a 1985 C4 and was concerned about the hood release cable failing. If it did, I'm not sure how I could ever open the hood. My shop manual does not cover this problem.

So I made back-up hood releases using 1/16" steel cable with aluminum ferrels. Total cost was $3, total time involved 30 minutes. They work just fine.

Nicely done, did it to my 89, decades ago, and it came handy once.
Once was enough, and it worked great!

I did the same thing. Haven't needed it yet, but it's cheap insurance.

Did mine also some time back, never had to use it so far. If you paint or use a dark marker on the cable it makes it harder to see (from thieves that is).

Thieves will never see my emergency release because it's behind my driver's seat.

While you're at it, how about a fire extinguisher?

The first thing I do when I get a new C4, is make up these cables. Gives me piece of mind. Plus if I need to pop the hood, I usually just release it one side at a time with cables. Saves reaching under the dash to release it.

Nice job did mine some years ago with black cable ties. Think about cleaning up latches and applying new lube. And grease OEM cables too!

Is grease the best thing to lube the cables or graphite powder?

I have always used grease on cables, hinges and such. I've used graphite powder in door locks on vehicles as well exterior doors in our home. Notwithstanding, graphite powder would certainly work on just the cables.
