Default Antenna

Hi
My antenna goes up but wont go down. You can hear motor wanting to take it down. You can push it down and the last few inches it will go down but you can hear antenna motor go on and off. I removed fuse so it wont kill my battery.
It work all day till we got home
I have a 1984 corvette
Thanks

There is a plastic for lack of a better word..chain inside the antenna. This has broken. You have two choices. Some have purchased rebuild kits and replaced the chain....others have bought and replaced the whole unit.

Hi
If plastic chain is broken would it also not allow it to move both ways. I just removed fuses to stop it from running all the time when radio is not on.
I have it up all the time and when you put fuse back in you hear motor running until you turn on radio. When you shut off car antenna motor is running so then i take fuse out. My understanding there is a plug at back of corvette i can unplug so I dont have to remove fuse. My question is it the motor or do a buy a kit only
Thanks

I just did this two weeks ago.. Antenna went up one day to work, turned the radio off, and antenna stayed up, but the motor ran. There is a plastic ribbon that brakes inside the mast. You can do this repair from the top of the car, and the motor does not need to be removed(and it's cheap); There are even kits for $30 if you do some research. That being said, if your motor in constantly running, it sounds a little fishy. Mine only cycled on/off.

There is one small gamble with just the antenna kit, and that's if the plastic ribbon brakes and shreds in little pieces, it may not all pull out when you pull the mast off. If that's the case, which is rare, you will need to pull the motor.

Done this twice in my '84, since 1985. While one side of the nylon-ish ribbon will emerge when the mast is pulled out, the other section remains inside the antenna housing. the motor may run or be intermittant, but the breakage is partially due to age and partially from old lube with plenty of dirt.

I removed the whole assembly, drilled out the case's rivets, thoroughly cleaned and relubed the internals, then used the kit's bolts to replace the rivets, knowing that I did a complete job. the hardest part is R/R of the assembly, which I accessed by partially dropping the L muffler.

There's plenty of how-tos, with pictures and this is relatively simple for a handy owner.

With the redone audio system, I wired in an antenna shutoff switch as I rarely listen to the broadcast drivel.

Just did the one on my 95, had about 6 inches of the cable left in the assembly. I was able to remove the assembly by removing the tire/wheel and wheel well.

There are a few instructions online on how to do this. I do not know what the design differences are between the mid 80s and early 90s, but on mine(96), the only thing holding the mast to the motor is a retaining nut and a ground/retaining sleeve.

1)Protect your car's paint around the antenna
2)Remove rubber antenna grommet from the top of the car
3)remove black antenna sleeve retaining nut
4)turn radio on to extend antenna or extend antenna manually
5)pull up on antenna to pop the mast out of the motor(may need a swift tug)
6)Extract antenna mast and broken piece noting the direction for the ribbon cable. The old antenna sleeve will come out with it.
7)When you have confirmed all the old plastic ribbon is removed, have someone feed the new antenna with radio on, in with new sleeve and turn the radio off. The motor will take up the antenna. It may take several times

All posts are correct with great advice, but

#5 should say jerk it up with all you got. if you just pull, you will be doing that for an eternity.

The rest is easy

I just installed the antenna switch and it was easy and it is great.

Now with smart phones, memory sticks and satellite radio terrestrial radio is obsolete as long you have your network available

With a coupe, you take off rear hatch molding. The plug is there. Not sure with yours

The picture is of the TIP of the antenna. You reuse the rest of the pieces.
