Default 1986 power steering cap

I feel really stupid asking this, but what is the deal with finding a PS reservoir cap for a 1986 C4? Putting this TPI into a 1978 c3 and I am getting the details worked out, including the power steering. I have the bracket and the plastic bottle but cannot find a cap. I think I found out that it has been discontinued, so is there a replacement cap that I just don't know about. Thanks.

That's puzzled me, too! Righty - loosy, lefty - tighty!! Back in the early days, Chrysler used RH threaded lug nuts on the right side of the car and LH threaded lug nuts on the left side of the car! Something about them working loose if they weren't that way!

I sort of understood the Chrysler thing back then, but I have never heard of a PS cap coming loose at high speeds! Thanks for the link but since I already have most of that assembly I was hoping not to have to buy the whole thing just for the cap, which if I loose it I will not be able to replace it. Now I know why I got such a good deal on my set up when I got it...no cap! Might have to come up with plan B. Thanks for the help.

There's very likely many options for an "after-market" reservoir and cap that could solve your issue. A different remote mount might also be a more manageable solution for this arrangement in a C3.

Reach out to Junior who posts here as "Steering_Experts" - reservoir and maybe requirements for this style pump in a C3 cylinder assist steering. I'd think there's maybe orifice changes etc required.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums..._experts1.html

I'd maybe ask in the C3 section for what requirements are necessary when adding this style Saginaw pump to the C3 steering assist cylinder style steering.

I probably will go the aftermarket route, especially since nothing on this project says stock.I have already changed the orifice with a kit from Burgeson. Thanks to Mr Jim Shay and the info he provided to me I learned all about pressures. I even have had #-6 an fittings welded to the oem steel lines coming out of the steering valve. Like I said, it's the easy thing that is giving me trouble. Who would have thought a backwards cap? THanks Mr WVZR.

I think I found one or two. 84-87 Turgo Buick Regal had them. Same thing was discontinued. I just think it's going to make me crazy every time I try to check the fluid and have to turn the cap backwards! Thanks again for the help.

You might check places like Moroso. I know they carry reservoirs for a number of vehicles. None are C4's but maybe some other make might be adaptable to your needs.

Good luck.

That's why they put a big Clockwise arrow on it, labeled "Open".

I smell marketing, putting a really odd power steering cap in a product means later replacement has to go back to them.

Like most marketing, failed.

Mr Roy, does any real man ever look at the arrow? They probably ran out of the caps because people like me kept twisting them in the wrong direction and stripped the threads. I really would love to know the thought process behind this. Pretty sure I will be going to Moroso or another brand, then I will sell MY set up with out the cap on eBay. Thanks to all and I have to admit this has been a learning experience.

Looks like a functional replacement could be 3D printed.
