Yeah that's what I thought. Its a little cumbersome to use, but I'm going to record all maintenance and repairs for my cars VIN there. Not that my car is anything special but a time and date stamp along with a description of the maintenance/repairs/modifications might go a long way toward preserving its value.
Ill tell what else is if a someone decided to restore a salvage title car you could post before and after pics there which could mean a lot down the line. Actually documenting any major repairs by the "do it yourself" crowd might actually have some real value.
If your posting maintenance records onto a database that other people can view, as the events occur in real time, then the evidentiary trail has more credibility. Plus, in this case, it seems the trail follows the VIN and not the database user, which means the person you sell the car to (whenever that happens) will benefit from your documentation as well as the performed maintenance. Only time will tell how useful this is, but Carfax is pretty highly regarded; this could easily be more so in a few years.

Thanks PDT, I guess I am only concerned with documenting for my own personal use. When I sell a vehicle I can print a copy of the record for the new owner. Sorry, I just don't need all the glitter and shiny lights.

I'm old school. A paper receipt means way more to me that a data base that could or could not have been manipulated. I can't imagine someone getting excited about buying a car with a complete history they can download verses and old folder filled with documents.
I get why someone would like it, but there is something.... real... about holding and original bill of sale.
The value of VINwiki is unclear at best. So was the value of Carfax when it got started. This is why I was wanting the forums opinions on it. From where I am standing it seems like a good idea that is in its formative stages. I intend to use it to record service history, but it does not seem to be limited to just that. For example, it seems you could post data about any car, maybe one that has the crap pounded out of it every weekend at the dragstrip, or maybe one that is consistently a show winner. Ultimately I guess I don't really know if its useful or not, but on the surface, the idea seems to have merit.

I agree having a journal in your shop is great, any time I do maintenance on any machine in my possession I document it in my shop. Its pretty cool to be able to look back 15 years.......I like digital records but for whatever reason I'm still stuck on paper, and I file all my receipts.
