Default C4 Emblem

Hi Guys, I am trying to replace the hood emblem on my 86 C4 and have run into a slight issue. I believe that the front emblem was supposed to have nuts holding it on to the back of the hood. However, these nuts are not there and the emblem is secured to the hood just by the thread of the emblems pins. It is impossible to pry it off without damaging the hood. Do you have any suggestions on how I could tackle this?

Perhaps with the aid of gentle heating with a heat gun?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

I just replaced the emblem on my ‘89 last month but mine had the nuts on the pins with no adhesive backing. If yours is just being held by the pins you should be able to tap it out by gently tapping on the pins from the back side with a socket extension or something.

That's a very nice idea, I was thinking to do this earlier. I'll give it a go tomorrow!

Use dental floss as there is a glued pad between it and the hood. Should come off easy after that

When I replaced my emblem, the nuts were there and needed to be removed. The replacement emblem had a peel off adhesive backing and so did the existing one... but the adhesive long since dried and was hardened. I used a plastic scraper and very delicately worked it under the old emblem until it broke loose - in pieces!

Afterwards I needed to use some 3M adhesive remover to soften up the dried adhesive and remove the remaining gunk. I wouldn't use too much heat out of concern for the paint or clear coat damage.

My old emblem didn’t have any adhesive at all, it just came right off when I loosened the nuts. The new emblem did have the adhesive backing but when I put it on I didn’t peel the covering off. I read somewhere not to stick the new emblem on because it would be easier to remove in the future if you want to detail or wax the hood.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I got it off by going back and forth between lightly tapping the pins from the backside of the hood and gently prying it off from the front (being careful not to make contact with the paint on the hood).

I can report that if the emblem is not secured, it will depart the hood at 120mph.

There is one out on the salt somewheres.

I've removed/replaced several, and the combination of
  • 3M Adhesive Remover pre-soaking
  • Heat gun/hair dryer
  • Dental floss

are my tried and tested suggestion.
