Default Weather Stripping

I knew my 95 C4 conv needed weather stripping replaced. After really bad storm this afternoon, I now know where. I thought only 60's MGBs leaked like a sieve. Wilcox seems to be a good place to start. Difficult procedure?

There is no weather strip that is genuinely easy to replace, and fixing water leaks is usually genuinely difficult.

IDK about the weatherstripping. As far as I am concerned, it will never be like any of my other cars that will go through a high pressure car wash spraying water at higher pressure not leak a drop. In fact, I can't even go through a brush wash without any water coming in either. I tried several places. GM dealer, Corvette speciality places and either they don't want to touch it because they can't make it better or they will try but not guarantee anything.

I am putting new weatherstrips on because of other reasons. If it doesn't get worse, I will be ecstatic if it leaks like before and not get worse.

Just trying to be less damp. Can't hurt to try

I'm sure it will be an improvement, but convertibles leak. All of them. Some have owners that don't notice, but they all leak.

Yup and the reason is that the available weatherstripping for our cars suck. I've paid for high dollar latex, sucks. I've paid for Wilcox and it sucks. Aftermarket weatherstripping just plain sucks!!

C4s should be washed by hand only. Here's a snippet from a 1992 vehicle information kit I downloaded from the GM Heritage Center:

Are you sure about this? I didn't think the OEM weatherstripping was much better which is why I changed it in the first place. New weatherstripping, same leaks. Somehow I think it is more design of the car than material.

Exactly what you want in a car. Perhaps this is why it became Government Motors. Perfect match made in heaven

I agree 100%. Most here seem to praise the OEM weatherstrip. IMO the OEM weatherstripping on my car is, by far, the worst of any car I've ever owned. Granted I didn't buy my 91 new (8 years old), but judging by the condition of the rest of the car I have no reason to think it was neglected in any way. Virtually every piece of weatherstripping was trash, including inner/outer door sills. I've had plenty of other cars this old and ALL had better lasting weatherstripping. I'm not sure aftermarket is any better, but it can't be any worse than OEM.

My Gm weatherstripping has lasted 30 years. My new aftermarket weatherstripping has already cracked or crumbled. The latex door weatherstripping created a black dust in my door jambs and slightly crumbled apart in some spots. My rear hatch cracked in the corners after a few weeks. My latex B pillar is doing ok so far. I regret removing the original Gm for the repaint. The fact is the current manufacturer(s) can't get the right formula. Some don't even have decent molds. This is why there's so many fitment or durability issues. And it's why original weatherstripping is so expensive. If you can find it.

I'm guessing you have no idea why GM failed, or why the government bailed them out.

I wouldn't say they were trashed when I got them in 04. I was selling my 89 Merkur XR4Ti and Scorpio and the totaled 91 Firebird. None of them leaked a drop at brush and high pressure jet commercial washers. My 91 Corvette in 04 couldn't make it through a hose down from a garden hose without leaking. Thing is, the weatherstrip was still in good shape. This is why I think it is the poor design.

Mine lasted from 91 to 04 and it was solid when taken off. Not sure of the storage conditions but it looked as good as the new ones I put on in 04. No cracks or crumbles but they leaked just as good. This is when you are being splashed by other's puddles and water gets in.
