IIRC the back-ups operate thru the neutral safety switch on an auto trans car and it may simply be worn out. There is an adjustment procedure in the FSM, you use a gage pin to set up the switch with the shifter (and trans) in neutral. It is important to follow the service manual procedure because it sets up the engine to only start in Park or Neutral as well as setting up the back-ups to work in Reverse. A new switch doesn't require the gage pin method, you break off a tang It is adjusted or replaced from the top... the console must come out.
