No experience with rim-ring protectors since the mid 70's however... if you look at this picture you can see at about the 2 o'clock position that the Goodyear GSD-3 (275-40-17) does actually come with a bead-protector that causes the edge of the rubber to stick out approx 1/4" from the wheel. Also the basic shape of the tire sidewall extends it out beyond the plane of the wheel. My wheels are stock size A-molds 9.5"x 17 with the stock base offset.
Thus depending on the tire you may be able to gain the protection you seek. In 7 years of running these rims (on GSD-3) I've yet to get a single curb scratch.
