According to the RPO, it has GM1, standard gearing, 2.59. Is that really that bad? My 89 has the G44 in an L98, so I really don't know what the 2.59 is like in an LT1
Its not that bad.... are you racing the car? If not, the torque curve in the L98 & LT-1 are good and the 2:59 is fine for regular driving use... Is a taller gear more fun? Sure. But if this is a leisurely driver, who cares?
Also, You wont get a garage queen for $6-7k.... A nice well kept car, yes.... not a garage queen. To me a garage queen has miles that would be 10,000 or less and everything in pristine (paint included) and/everything working perfectly condition.
I like the 26,000 mile factor. Maybe take a body/paint guy with you or take the car to a paint/body guy to assess what could be done...Might need a cut and buff... or a wet sand, cut & buff....
We've all heard of cars that don't normally fetch $5000 get sold for $10000 because somebody got stupid and had to have it or didn't know what it was worth. I had a lady ask some ridiculous price for a car. Told her that she was asking private party, more than retail and she doesn't even have a safety inspection. "My BF said it was worth.....", Yes but he isn't the one writing the check. Months later, it was advertising for less than what I was offering. As I have always asked, what is the average selling price of something in that condition? That tells you how LIKELY you are to get that kind of money in some reasonable time.
So you buy one for $7k that needs all kinds of stuff done to it.
Depends on what kind of stuff we are talking about. IF the paint is horrible, probably not since it would probably cost $5000 to make it right so I would have to buy it dirt cheap. Shocks, tires and other simple things to fix, sure. This means I have a new KNOWN part. Electronic failures? Pass. Too much risk and time. Seats and carpet, we can talk. Water damage? No.
