Default Huge Bolt!!

Need to buy tires anyway, but wasn't too excited about having that process expedited to now.. and on top of that I was only driving it locally like less than 2 miles round trip.. anyways, I know everyone has picked a nail or screw up before, but! have you ever had your wheel punctured by said nail or screw??

I worked at a shop where we sold tires and I never saw anything quite like that!

This is probably a ridiculous thought, but that’s not a structural part of the wheel and it only has to hold 30-40 psi. If you cleaned up the hole and filled it with a two part liquid metal epoxy I’d bet it would hold up as good as new. Clean it up, use some tape as a backing to hold the epoxy in place, let it cure, sand and paint the visible portion on the inside of the barrel..... like I said, maybe ridiculous but I’ve been known to try an unconventional repair or two in my day🙂.

We picked up a bolt as big around as my finger. It had fallen and was straight up at a RR track. It punched a nice neat round hole completely through the steel belts on one of the tires of my 2500HD. Punched it out so clean the bolt itself came out and the tire went flat in seconds. It happened right after we had the undercoating on the truck touched up so the spare tire was at home, of course.

It was probably a 1/2" or 5/8" dia bolt. I saw the head, tried to limp the truck home and it threw the bolt out.

Id bet this would work.. Maybe Ill try it when I get home, provided no one has liberated it from the trash heap.. Which is very unlikely given the area I stay in.

I've picked up my share of nails, screws and misc items stuck in tires. The one local tire shop has a 'big' jar with stuff they've pulled out of tires. Screwdrivers, wood chisel, RR spike, bolts, a horse shoe, even a pair of pliers. Unbelievable what can get stuck in a tire but I've not seen one go through the tire and rim before.

My buddy with the '90 picked up a bungee cord in his tire. Not only did it put a hole in the tire, causing a flat, it also beat the p*ss out of the side of the car before he could get stopped. It gouged the fiberglass, scratched the paint, over all made a mess of the side of the car. Those "S" hooks on a card, being whipped around by the tire, do a phenomenal amount of damage.

Let me guess....right rear? Debris get kicked up by the front tire and spins up under the rear tire. Right side, right lane is more common due to stuff rolling to the right because of the crown of the road. I had a piece of 1/2" pipe go right through a RR tire.

I have worked with tires for a lot of years and never saw that. Sorry it damaged the wheel too. That just adds a big insult to the tire injury.

I had a big bolt (or something) damage my pickup. It damaged the tire with a big unrepairable hole, but was big enough that the tire threw it up and into the bottom of the truck bed. I have a dent that can be seen from the top side of the bed. That was my worst one.

Good luck finding replacements/repairing them.

I don't know that the Epoxy would do a repair but dependent upon the wheel I'm quite sure there'd be a TIG/MIG Weld repair possible and then sealed with a 2-part Epoxy. Years ago there was a sealing/repair for 'porosity' problems with OE wheels.

OP - were you able to retrieve the wheel? Is it an OE/GM wheel or a reproduction done by 'other than OE/GM' An inexpensive cast wheel I'd think a difficult fix.
