I can see the benefit of this kind of filter installation, it is likely to significantly reduce maintenance time by requiring only a drain & fill rather than a flush every time. But sooner or later you'll have to flush the system because gravity still works.. What I mean is, the coolant is not flowing 24h/day and pockets of sediment and scale will still build up at the bottom of the cooling jackets. It may take many years to see any negative effect, but I'm confident this kind of filter will not completely override the need for an occasional flush.
What if we changed the coolant service interval to every couple of years? Would that negate a lot of the issues?

Since most coolants are good for more than a couple years, I think this would be a waste. (I always used long-life coolants.) If it were me, I would install the filter and change it after 1 year (assuming no cooling issues), topping off the system as needed. Then going forward, I would do a drain & fill every 4 years, change the filter at that time. and do a full system flush every 3rd or 4th time. Just be sure to use anti-seize on the knock sensor(s) so they don't get stuck in the drain holes, being left in there so long.
In my experience, most filters flow from the outside in, and the filtered fluid exits the filter from the center threaded hole. That's why there is a reinforced steel center tube inside the filter media, to keep it from collapsing under higher pressures once the filter media starts to load up with particulates.
You're right! IDK how I got that backward, but you're right. Thanks for pointing that out.

It depends. Standard coolant calls for every two years. Hardly anyone dose this however, then we get thread about overheating, leaking heater cores etc.
If one does proper cooling system maintenance from the get go, there will never BE any rust, scale or other debris floating around in your coolant. The coolant passages in the block should look "as cast" at 20 years/200,000 miles or what ever miles, if cared for properly. So changing the coolant every two years could help.
If you've bought and older car with unknown cooling system care, the filter is a fantastic idea....it's very likely that the car hasn't had proper cooling system maintenance and has some debris in the coolant.
What results have you noticed in a couple of hours of driving time? Wouldn't a good start of a test be to clean up the motor throughly and then run it for a couple years and at least check the filter for residue?
I've owned this car for 3+ years. 14k miles and the PO just had car serviced at Chevy dealer a month before I bought it. I didn't like the color of the coolant then, so I did a drain and refill and adding rust inhibitor. Coolant was much better. I've only put 1000 miles on it since then and during this past summer I checked coolant (looked a little rusty) so I did another drain/refill and more rust inhibitor. Took it on a few decent rides and rechecked to find small amounts of suspended rust showing up again. I considered flushing but was not going to make that mess around my home. So I put in the coolant filter (left the same coolant in radiator since it was 2 weeks old). First test run after filter instal was for about an hour, rechecked radiator when it cooled down and no more rust. Took it out a few weeks later for a two hour ride. Rechecked again and still green and clean. I have no doubt the filter cleaned it up. Haven't taken the car out lately due to lousy winter weather! Next sunny and dry day I'll get it out again and keep checking the condition of the coolant. Having the cooling system filtered gives me a fighting chance to keep it clean. Works for me!
