I have a 91 vert, replaced the 10 year old starter with a new high torque starter, the one I took off had a neopreme type of gasket, the new starter would sometimes engage and sometimes not,,,,and finnaly hung up and ate the kick out gear....inspected the flywheel seems fine...is there a shimming issue, if so how do I start? dont want to eat another starter...
any help would be greatly appreciated,,,Mery Christmas and Hpy New Year
Its hard to tell based on what you are saying, but I think you are describing a situation where you need a small shim. What did it sound like when it was cranking over ?
Pic 1 has the cutout for the oil pan. Someone didn't do that for their starter and their's was flat like Pic 2. That caused it to tilt in a way no shim can work and issues came about. Came into shop class and would "diesel on" after it was cranked and the key released. Does your's have the cutout? Pic 1
I started a recent thread regarding those starters and upon responses and checking them out, looked that it would take a little bit of screwing around to get them to fit right, shims , etc.....my starter had been clicking too much but now is working normally (who knows??), but I'm going to replace it with another peanut starter like what is in there to avoid this problem.....

IIRC, some of the peanut starters also have instructions on shimming. They sell shims at the parts houses so I'm assuming it isn't a unique to C4 issue. Further to that, IIRC, the FSM also mentions checking the gap and shimming.
