Always read it’s accessible but have never come across it. Had the rear deck trim off today and noticed that the cable is only about 6” long and terminates under the trim. Has someone clipped this short or is there another cable that is more accessible?
That is just the excess, the working part of the cable is in the other direction. The small silver cable stop that is close to the opener is what pulls against the actual lock to release the hatch.
Sorry if I did not completely clarify how it works. There isn't a physical cable that runs from the door or console buttons to the release. It is an electrical solenoid that is attached to the short piece of cable that activates the hatch. Wiring is in the main bundle that runs to the rear of the car. Hence the reason you can not open the hatch if the battery is not connected or dead.
I know the solenoid is electrically operated. Always thought I read there was an emergency release cable buried somewhere should the electrics fail. Doesn’t sound like it?
Thats it in your picture. The emergency cable is short, but will work if you pull it. Some people have extended it and run it up towards the front so you dont have to crawl so far in.

I've never looked for mine, but my understanding is the same as yours, there actually is a cable accessible under the carpet in the rear of the car.
