I am planning on some engine upgrades/mods (probably around spring of next year), but want to start researching the subject early and making some decisions about a plan of attack.. Here is what I will be working with. 86 Vette w/ 127k on original engine. Cast Iron Heads. (well maintained, running strong). I will probably have about $5000 to spend. What is the best way to use that cash? (BTW- I live in Cali and Headers are apparently not an option.) Stroker? Rebuild w/ mods, ??
WOW!!!!!! Imagine all of the stickers you could buy with $5,000!!!!!!!!!!!! :jester
I'm not familiar with California's wacky emissions laws, I know what I would do, but that would include ceramic coated equal length headers and straight pipes out to mufflers, 58mm TB, cams, ignition, wires, plugs, aluminum heads (ported and polished), intake, 3.73 rear, lowering and a good ole' K&N filter. Have I exceeded the budget? That should make ya pretty fast.
first question, are your from Ca or just stationed there? only reason i ask is that i'm stationed near Dallas where there is emissions testing but i'm froom Fl and that's where the vette is registered. i'm trying to save up mayself for the 383 upgrade been reading a lot of the threads on it.
Superram, Accel 219 cam, 383 and a good catback; I know the SR is CARB legal, not sure about the 219 but i know it can be made emissions legal.
And youd really benefit from ditching the heads and getting AFR 190s or some 88-91 D-port heads off a wrecked vette or someone else.
As for headers, there are none that are CARB legal, youll either have to have things removed for emissions testing and buy some Hooker 1 3/4", or port out the stock manifolds and get a Random Tech cat converter.
This will put you at the limit of your budget though (and prolly over it :D), so try to get things used if possible. The 383 will suck up most of it, if you have it done RIGHT.
Thanks for the info guys. As to whether I am registering tabs in Cali, even though I am Wash Resident, answer is YES. I pay only $36 per yr in TABS as Out of State Military resisdent, per car. Also, if I were to change my residency to Cali, I would have to pay that crazy Cali Tax on my income. (Wash St. has no State Tax).... Anyways, I am going to have to do a lot more research, I think before I get into the engine mods.
Just make sure to watch out for the smog laws in our wonderful state....believe me they will turn on you and bite you in the butt when you least expect it.....
Been there...done that......restricts all my mods....just have to live with it .....BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just be carefull....just my humble opinion...They will get ya!!!!!!!!!!!Better to be safe than sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
