I put the shorties on my 95 coupe LT1, smooth install and they were very responsive when I had install questions. The passenger side header flange is *REAL* close to the frame but as another forum member had said, the engine rotates away during acceleration and it won't hit - and they were correct.
I just saw shorties and the are expensive for the return on investment (I used a '96), but for your '89 I would just get a set of LT1 manifolds. They are plug and play (only thing you need to do is "oval out" one of the flange holes) and side by side there is a difference. I just sold a pair to a member, but you shouldn't pay more than $100 for a pair plus shipping (they're 30lbs). Some on ebay sell for $60-70 EACH side, stay away or try a corvette salvage yard.
If I were you, Id never waste my time on a shorty nor another cast iron manifold... Long Tubes are the way to go. Its all about exhaust scavenging and collector length. Any brand of long tubes is better than the best brand shorty imho... UNLESS, youre just looking to increase noise.... then by all means.... buy a shorty style header.
