fan comes on throws check engine code?

fan comes on throws check engine code?
No check engine light on but about 4 minutes after starting the car CEL comes on simultaneously with cooling fan. . Not even warmed up and cooling fan comes on and as soon as that happens the check engine light comes on.
Read where if I ground pins 4 and 12 I should be able to read code. Just thought it was strange the cooling fan comes on within a couple of minutes of starting?

Its not the fan causing the code, the ECM is triggering it based on a fault its seeing.
