Looked at a 86 coupe a few weeks ago. Owned by an older gentlemen who unfortunately started showing signs of dementia. He had started to disassemble the dash at which time the family stepped in. Put the car on a trailer and stored it at his sisters house where it's been sitting since July 2018. When I saw it the car was covered in dirt and couldn't open the doors because the tires were flat. Went back today with a fresh battery and tools. Jacked up the rear of the car enabling me to open the doors. Spider webs, dirty but no wet, musty smell. After changing the battery out it fired right up and other than smoke from the stuff burning off the motor ran fairly well. Odometer shows 198xxx miles but the interior doesn't look like it. Usual issues: one headlight doesn't flip, targa top lining gone, sport seats inoperative, dry rotted tires, and mufflers rusted out. Surprisingly gauges all worked and visible. Asking price was $2700 but when asked if they had any offers was told I could have it for what one person (who made offer over phone without seeing the car) had offered, $1500. Just waiting for replacement title to arrive. Do I need it or want it, no. But it will give me something to do over the winter. I think I'll be spending a lot more time in the C4 parts for sale forum as well as craigslist, eBay and Facebook marketplace.
I bought my '90 for $1800 with a rod through the oil pan and the worst paint I've ever seen a couple years ago. Sometimes it's not do we need it, but do we want to save it.
