Looking to replace the stock mufflers on my 84 with something a little more aggressive sounding but allowing me to hold a conversation in the car . Looking for some suggestions. Want these to be a direct replacement.Hope to hear from someone.
Consider keeping your stock mufflers and swapping out your Cat for a high flow, hi perf one.
As you state, if will get to that little more aggressive and still hold a conversation" goal
One thing to add the, the uh, stock 84s are extremely quiet. The muffler was 84 only and changed slightly for 85. I had a high flow cat on my car with stock reproduction mufflers and most sedans were louder.
Now if they aren't the turn down style muffler then the above is sound advice. (because it is an 85 and up muffler. Which is more than likely though)
Try https://www.magnaflow.com/ If you replace just the stock mufflers with one of the "Straight Thru" performance Magnaflows, using the same size pipe inlet diameters, (try a single inlet with dual outlets) you'll increase the growl without much drone. Get the largest overall size Magnaflow that will snuggly replace your oem mufflers. Or, just keep your oem mufflers, if they aren't rusted out or damaged, and replace any resonator you may have with a straight thru pipe or an X-pipe. That will increase the growl and be cheaper. Replacing your stock cats with high flow cats could increase your sound, but could be costly.

In my very different experience, I purchased an Ebay exhaust and I absolutely love it. It's nice and aggressive with dual 3.5" tips per side and it really adds a nice growl at higher RPMs. I have a
but plan on taking a longer one once I get my car shipped to my new location. I will say, I also have catless headers so yours may sound a bit different but it'll give you an idea. Best of all, there's no drone in the cabin. My SO was actually shocked when I took her for the first drive with it and it was near silent while cruising...then again I was also driving a modded Ford Focus ST and that **** droned at idle.

Okay that street looks awfully familiar... where abouts in the garden state are you?

That street is in Rockaway, NJ. I just recently moved to San Diego. I know there was a neighbor down the street from me that owned a late-90's C4 but his was red.

Similar but not the same then. That wold be a bit further north of where I'm thinking it is.
if the OP is going to swap out the main cat for a high flow version, consider upgrading the complete system to the walker 86-91 design. 84-85 main cats are fairly pricey vs. the 86-91 variant. walker's front y-pipe is (pre) catless, and the main cat is high-flow. walker quiet-flow SS mufflers are a bit louder than stock - not "in-your-face" loud, but IMO, just right. the complete system from summit racing comes in around $600. did this on my 85, and one of the best mods I've made. well worth the $$$. one thing, I would AVOID MAGNAFLOW. I've tried to use their stuff on three different occasions, and had fitment problems on all three. stuff looks good, but definitely not plug and play hardware. walker on the other hand, fit like a glove -
