Upgrading 84 radio
How difficult is it to upgrade the Boise radio in a 1984. Most of my speakers do not work and the tape deck is broken. I want nothing fancy, two speakers in the door would be enough, I just want to be able to play CDs? I am not good with electronics if this takes extensive electronic experience to do the work. I have had the radio out several times trying to fix the tape deck, but it is time to move on to something more modern.
I just bought a Retrosound replacement deck for my 89 with Bose, and I am getting it installed next Wednesday along with rewiring the car for two 6.5" Kicker door speakers with adapters to go in place of the Bose boxes, and two 6x9 Kickers in the rear. I'll try to report back how it works out.
If you fit an aftermarket stereo system just bypass the amps behind the speakers, they will work fine or run new wires to the speakers.
You can fit nice big 6x9 speakers in the rear, they will sound great.
I ended up putting a double din unit in my 85, a pioneer one with bluetooth for phone and the usual satnav, dvd, rear camera etc.
There were double din center vent panels available years ago, i ended up just modifying mine adding the double din surround in the vent bezel.
looks factory after a bit of filler and paint, however is a bit of work.
