I'm a newbie 4+3 owner and I have been trying to soak-up all of the info here. :-)
I ordered a filter kit for the overdrive unit from Eckler's, but after a month the "available" part has not shipped.
My understanding is that this filter is the same for the older Ford FMX transmission, but doesn't use the same gasket (and that we can just use RTV anyway for the C4. Is this right?
It is not a "filter", it is a screen. Clean it with solvent or BrakeKleen, and put it back on. Once you get it out and look at it, you will understand exactly what I mean, and agree. There is no benefit to replacing it unless it is damaged. Clean it and be done.
EDIT: Here. I found this. No idea if it is actually available.
I ordered one of their gasket and filter kits for my 4-3 a couple of weeks ago from these people. They had them in stock for that price and charge around $9.00 FEDX shipping. They shippe right away and recieved with in a couple of days, My mechanic changed the filter and used the gasket from this kit. with no problem

Maybe some here would clean and reuse the old one but to me cleaning the old used filter/screen and hoping you did a good enough job is not for me. It's a waste of time. They are designed to remove and hold locked into in its screen mesh design any dirt and contaminants. Mostly particles you'll not be able to see. Would you clean and reuse your old fuel filter if you had it removed? Would you reuse your fuel pump sock/filter in your tank when replacing your fuel pump? I don't think so. You'll always wonder if its going to fail because you used the old one. The new replacement filter/screens are SO in expensive you'd be crazy to not just buy one or two for future replacements.

The filter is the same one used in the old Ford FMX transmissions. But the rubber O-ring as found in the 4+3 is not used in the Ford version. You can remove the existing o-ring and install it in the new filter. Use a good RTV sealant such as "The Right Stuff" or the MoPar RTV sealant. Make sure the rail on the trans case is clean and straighten the edges if the pan. There has been some discussion over the years regarding what fluid to use. The FSM says to use non-synthetic ATF, not synthetic.
