Eliminate or Aftermarket Mufflers?
Hello C4 fam. I have a stock 89 auto coupe with original exhaust that finally needs replaced. It is emmissions exempt and I found a true dual exhaust, no Y cat Y.
It’s just a cruiser and that’s fine. I’d like a nice exhaust note but don’t want drone or anything too loud. I saw a YT vid where a dude installed muffler eliminators and swears it’s quiet at highway cruising speeds and only loud if he stomps on it. I’m a little skeptical. There may be a cold air intake in my future too.
Should I go with muffler eliminators or corsa, magnaflow, etc. muffler? I would like y’all’s thoughts, opinions, ideas, and suggestions before I take the next step. Thanks in advance!

I more or less have eliminators on mine and I can have a conversation while driving around no problem if I'm not into it. Its loud just not in the car as much as you'd expect. But can wake the dead no problems if you hit it.

I had muffler eliminators,...made my car sound like a truck with a hole in the muffler at idle. Was pretty cool sounding when I got on the gas, was ok at normal driving. Found me a used OBX system from here off the forum,...wow!...what a difference!... I'd say it's louder than stock at normal driving, and sounds really aggressive when your in the gas (good deep tones)....

The elims are loud but not real droney if that makes sense. I dont like them much on stock cars as they do have a truck like note.
No drone
Stock or Corsa
Dynomax super turbo/walker quiet flow possibly
DDone with the rest

I have eliminators on mine and they were perfect, especially for the money. Some folks have mentioned drone, but I haven't really experienced much of that. I have an LT1 though, so maybe that's the difference.

I talked to a local speed shop who asked what I’m looking to do. He will come back with options and pricing. I’d think with the cat removed there’d be a need for some kind of light muffler than open pipes from the heads. Otherwise it’ll run too lean without a mild tune.

When I replaced the the mufflers on my 1986 roadster I used stock mufflers. I don't need to drive something that is loud the stock sound for me is good enough. I also might add the stock sound is easier on my hearing.

I wouldn’t get rid of the cat, I had it hollowed out and it had some annoying drone on the highway paired with the Magnaflow catback. I suppose it depends on use as well but I’ve got the Allen’s high flow cat with the magnaflow and I’m really happy with it now

I saw something like this but with an H pipe. With no cat or mufflers it might be too loud or not have enough back pressure. Speed shop dude will know. He sounded excited about the prospect.

Cost is a factor. I’m not necessarily cheap but I am frugal. And I know what I want - a decent sound, louder than stock, that’s still quiet when I’m cruising along. It ain’t a hot rod but it can sound like one when I stomp on the gas.

Why is that? I keep hearing that there needs to be backpressure but not too much or else but never a real good explanation of that process

Good video, aklim. It definitely shows how complicated exhaust tuning can be. It also highlights how difficult it is to throw exhaust parts (headers, mufflers, pipe diameters) at a car, and expect big power gains...

Your ECM will trim fuel/air at steady speed & light accel.
I suggest an AFPR to bump fuel pressure to get around 12.6:1 at WOT. If you bump fuel pressure say 10% fuel flow will increase by ~5%.
Have you modified the air intake for better flow? (for sure you have removed the "frisbee" from WP front)

I have stock manifolds into duals with H pipe into Corsas.
Everyone else likes the sound and it was fun for the summer but now too loud for me so I'll be changing it up to quiet it down a bit. I did a quick research and went with the H pipe instead of straight duals, supposed to better with the scavenging at the lower rpm range, and Y pipe is better for higher revs. Would be interesting to ask that of the speed shop guy.
