In posted yesterday about my digital dash doing some strange things, however i think the problem is more serious. This morning I started the car, a 1984 Corvette and it started idling at 1700 rpms and held that idle steady. The dash then once again went to centigrade with the red overheating light on efter the engine was still cold as car was only running for two minutes. Antifreeze is full and the engine never got to warm up as it never idles at 1700 rpms even when on a cold start. Will a vacuum leak cause the cooling number tow switch from Fahrenheit to centigrade and show read light on even when engine is cold.? I suspect the Xram has broken a seal. If this is the case I am not sure what i shall do. The previous owner switched the ecm and put an 85 fuel pump in the car so i do not know how impossible it will be to redo this whole operation?

Now the idle died down, and the car seems normal yet the cooling temp keeping switching to centigrade shows the battery light on and red light overheating, but the car is NOT overheating

It's generally a good idea to keep your problems to a single thread while people are trying to help you. But if the car thinks it's overheating but isn't, the usual suspect is the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

i understand, but I was beginning to think I had a problem with a intake leak. I just heard from the company that rebuilt my dash several years ago. As I understand what I believe he is telling me that the problem sounds like it is in the alternator. This could be why the battery light is light inside the coolant gauge is also going on. Do you know if the battery light goes on inside the coolant temp gauge on and 1984 is that telling the customer that the alternator is faulty? .

The 'battery' light indicates a problem with the charging system as a whole. In most systems, that means a problem with either the alternator, voltage regulator, or battery. I'm not familiar with the '84, but if I had to guess I'd guess that the alternator has an internal voltage regulator. So if you're sure the battery is good, then the alternator could be faulty.

If you have a multimeter, you can test it by looking for AC current coming out of the alternator. There shouldn't be any; but when the diodes inside an alternator fail, they allow AC current to flow, which does not play nice with the DC current systems in your vehicle. Or you can just replace the alternator and see if the problem resolves itself.
