how do I disconnect the alarm system in my 89 ? without causing other issues

Are you talking of dis-arming your VATS system, or does the car aftermarket alarm system.

I believe VATS, you can't, and if you aftermarket system, either find the module for the alarm follow the wires, and discount them, or take it alarm place tell them to remove it.

What is it doing you want it removed, and really you can't disarm it, can by-pass the ignitions system if it's malfunctioning?

I never had drain on a battery on my 1989 I had four 23 years, never experience a drain, and if you have one I would recommend find the short in your electrical system or buy quick discount for your battery.

If you want to read any current draw, you need to put your meter in series, not parallel.

I agree with @arbee . Need a meter to determine parasitic draw and then start isolating the issue. I've seen before where an alternator created the draw down despite it charging well.
