Default NORM A/C Setting

What does this setting do on the manual climate control? Max and bi-level are pretty clear, but this one doesn't seem to be noted in the FSM anywhere. Does it just cycle the compressor less than MAX?

This is on a 1985 with the manual climate control.

Max setting routes cabin inside air to the fan to recirculate, instead of using bringing outside air in, as it does in the Norm setting. That's why the fan seems to speed up in Max, because there's no resistance to airflow. The fan is not trying to push air into a closed chamber, like it is in the Norm setting. You can check this by opening a window a bit. Also, in Norm and Max, it pushes air out via the dash vents. Bi-level puts air out both through the dash vents and floor vents. I don't believe the cycling of the compressor changes with dash settings, as it is controlled with refrigerant pressures.
