I just broke the nose off my Dana 44 and cracked the carrier in half about an hour ago. When I get the car home and in the air I will take some pictures of the destruction I've caused.
Question I have is, do I need to drop the entire batwing or can I unbolt the carrier housing from the batwing and remove (what's left of it) that way?

It should be much easier to handle/manipulate if you remove diff and the rear cover as an assembly. Unbolt half-shafts, rear toe assembly etc. Yours certainly isn't the first but generally there's circumstances that preceded the event. Did it bust from a 'standing hi-rev launch' or .....
I have a NOS GM D44 housing I might consider the sale of.

Very interested in this Sir.
Well.. what happened was 305/45 17 Mickey Thompsons and a 4500rpm hole shot.. thats all.
As soon as I dumped the clutch, there was no bang, no loud noise.. just nothing as if the driveshaft was totally disengaged. The pinon gear attempted to climb the ring gear and just tore the entire nose off the diff. Crawled under the car w the phone and this was the sight:
What happened w the 2 step? I too was using my 2 step when this failure happened.
I saw that newman housing, looks noice! but spensive.
Saw this as I was searching for a replacement housing:
..... And this Gladiator thing is not expensive ? ... it looks like all factory stuff including the housing ... the 2-step disengaged a split second before the trans brake and the car launched at full throttle with sticky Hoosier DR's on a freshly prepped starting line ... there was a loud bang and the car didn't move .....

lol no it totally is, was just mentioning there was another "beefed" up case out there.
Slunds pretty much like my experience. I keep beating myself up for it, but hey.. had to see if I could launch. the answer was a resounding no.
