Default Exhaust part

Sorry to be such a pest with the new-bee questions. I bought this 1987 C4 with the intent to restore it but I’m new to a lot of this.

What are the two things, one on each side? Are those converters, mufflers or what. I’ve searched the manual and see pictures with them included bit nowhere are they named. Can they be removed when the new system is made? Would that give me fault codes if I did?

Catalytic converters. Some people have them and others remove them. Most of it depends on if you need to pass emissions testing or if you do not mind the smell of a rich fuel exhaust.

Catalytic converters. My 86 had them, I removed them and the AIR pump along with all the plumbing when I installed long tube headers. No inspection for an almost 36 year old car here in NJ

So, there are THREE converters then since there is a much larger one further down the exhaust pipe? Hummmm

3 cats, the first two are called pre-cats, and the main is a much larger one in the middle.

Precats are often removed as they are quite restrictive, either with a catless Y pipe or headers. So long as you leave the O2 sensor in roughly the same location, no codes will set and you won't have any problems removing them.
