I’ve read all the posts about the car naturally runs hot, but if it is above 90, I am getting into 260-270 range after a few red lights. What should I look for or do? Thermostat?
Well, the radiator is more than likely original and needs to be professorially cleaned out, gets build up in it and cuts down on its cooling compacity. I would try that first the radiator cools the car not the thermostat, the thermostat regulates coolant flow, but the radiator does the cooling .. I had 3-C4s in Houston TX in summer 100 % everyday I just went with 3-row radiator 160 stat , chip and forgot about it ..But that not cheap to do but worked ,I would try the radiator clean out first ..
That is getting way too hot. No offense intended but does it have coolant in the overflow tank? You can check it cold or hot there are marks for either way on the tank dipstick.
if so I would take a real close look at the radiator itself, does it appear to be clean or caked up with road debris?
what temp thermostat are you running?
I would check for leaves inside between the radiator and A/C radiator, there vacuum cleaner that sucks up everything, I once pack of cigarettes crushed no smokes, that also can make the car not cool properly. I own 89 for 23 years, and when I pulled my radiator what surprise.
I would check that area, and in the day of C4, some parts catalogs made a screen to keep leaves out.
Not sure where you reside since your profile does not mention it but I hope you do not continue to drive the car at those temperatures. You are running a risk of damaging the head gaskets through over heating resulting in warping the aluminum heads. If you do not have the skills to troubleshoot and repair the problem find someone soon or it could lead to a lot more costly repairs.
Well that changes things a bit and makes me feel like it is not getting air flow through the radiator until you are on the highway. Sounds like a clogged radiator
