Default Leaking Engine Coolant

My 1988 C4 is leaking Engine Coolant, from Part# 14084369 Corvette Oil Cooler to metal line heater hose. The part is discontinued, how do I fix it How do you replace parts that have been discontinued??? Been on the Internet and phone for hours.

Thanks any comments much appreciated.

I uninstalled the entire oil cooler system.

It's more of an oil warmer anyway.

And now, as a bonus, I can use a larger oil flter.

Just have to plug the block where the coolant goes back into the block.

But if you wanna keep it the way it is, your description of the leak isnlt typed very clearly.

You're saying it's leaking coolant, from Part# 14084369 Corvette Oil Cooler to metal line heater hose.

The only things between Part# 14084369 to the metal line is a couple of rubber hoses.

You can go to NAPA and buy a similarly shaped hose and cut it to work if it's just the rubber hose between the cooler and the metal line as a workaround.

If it's the actual oil cooler itself, then maybe eBay or from someone on here used. My old one is probably in a pile around here some place.

Personally, I'd just ditch the whole oil cooler system if it were me. It's counterintuitive, given the use of synthetic oils of today. It's easy to do.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah hopefully it can be welded or brazed shut. Been on the phone for hours looking for the part. Discontinued……..tough. Hard to find mechanics who work on older cars anymore

It’s the metal tubes running from that, that’s leaking……

It's probably the rubber hose that connects to the metal pipe that split or something, then.

Those oil warmer, I mean cooler, hoses dry out and crack and are often ignored. They're right next to the exhaust, too.

If that's it, you can find a hose with a similar bend some place in it and cut it to fit as a workaround.

If it actually is the metal pipe itself, then the only way that can happen is if there's a hole in it. The way that pipe usually gets messed up is if your motor mounts are shot and the block is resting on the pipe some place.

Here's the NAPA coolant hose identification guide (if it turns out to be a leak where the rubber connects to the metal hose)

Best to get it up on ramps and get under there and get a real good look at where the leak actually is. Leak sources can fool you.

In this video, a feller replaces those hoses by cutting them to fit from a similarly shaped hose. (NAPA 11138, from the hose guide)

It's an '85, but same setup as far as the oil warmer, I mean cooler, goes.

Of course, that's asuming that it's the rubber that's gone bad where it connects to the metal. Which, though not guaranteed to be the problem, is the more likely source of the leak.

If it turns out be the metal pipe that has a hole in it, you're better off ditching the oil warmer, I mean cooler, all together. You'll save yourself a heck of a lot of time and headaches. And loss of blood. lol.

That thing is a giant pain in the rear end to get off, much less put back on to replace. And you have to deal wit hthat tee connector running through the AC bracket, too? Pft.

I'd get rid of all of it, including the Tee that goes to that pipe on the other end. Your life will be much easier in the future when doing other things.

I did this morning at the local gas station. It’s the metal part that’s leaking. A small hole. Maybe Brazing it shut as was mentioned. Who does that kind of work? Smh

Default braze it. or have it brazed. not welded.

or replace with soft silicone hose. i installed this cooler (heat exchanger—which yes—works very well on the track to regulate oil temps within 7-8 deg C of coolant temps) on a track car and didnt have the steel hose u r trying to repair. I simply ran soft line. Worked just fine.

But in your case, id have it removed, and simply have it braze repaired.
