Hello all, I have a 1992 vette that I think the vats system is failing, but not 100%. The problem is it starts, runs fine, about 5/10 min the security light starts flashing, along with a sys flashing in the speedo, then the service asr light comes on, all the wile it continues to run fine no problems, until i shut it off, then it wont start back up, a couple times it started and died, security light flashes and so on. When it isn't starting it still cranks over fine, I have tried both keys and same result. Sometimes I disconnect the battery for a wile, reconnect it and it will fire right up and run fine, then the same thing happens, (flashing security light and same sequence) then I shut it off, and again, cranks fine but wont start. It is NOT the optispark for sure, 100%. That was replaced as part of the trouble shooting and needed to be done anyway as the water pump shaft seal had started to leak and it was going to be an issue at some point anyway. Fired right up after the optispark / water pump change, then worked fine for 15 minutes then the same exact sequence. The code I retrieve is a 72, data link fault. I have a guy that has bypassed the vats system for others in my area on C4s, and that is going to be my next step. Then after that replace ecm module if it does not work. I am a geeky engineer in the aircraft engine repair business but electronic stuff on these C4s (I have had 5) frustrate me. Just wanted to see if anyone has had this issue before and what may have fixed it if so. Thanks, Mike
I was thinking the ECM failure after some more research as well. Found two threads in other forums with the EXACT same symptoms, code 72 only and both were resolved by the ECM repair. Thanks for the feedback as this was very helpful information you presented. I appreciate the time you spent to try and help! I think I will give them a call and send it out.
Whoever you choose to do the repair be sure you remove and hold on to your PROM when you send it in. You might check other vendors. I don't recall the fellow in Italy responding back that his was successful. Maybe I just missed the post. Be sure you ID what you have so you know you're getting the same back. Does you're current ECM have a genuine production label? Maybe a Delphi that would have been done by GM/ACD? You certainly have the 'symptoms' it seems.

Take the snapshot of yours and this image to a GM Dealer and see if maybe your ECM isn't covered in this program. The way I understand it works is you/dealer send yours in, if repairable the dealer is notified. If it IS NOT I understand it's returned to the dealer NO CHARGE. How much? No idea but it might be my first ask if I had an OE like yours. I believe the program is still available for many CCM, BCM and PCM.
