Default Corvette Challenge Series

It surprises me that more people don’t talk about the Corvettes from the Corvette Challenge series here.

Everyone talks about how rare their ZR-1 is, but the challenge cars are basically one of one… And only made for a few years.

In my opinion, they are some of the coolest Corvettes ever made, and so historically significant, considering they were really the first factory inspired & backed Corvette race-cars for pro racing customers, and if your car was converted new… it was done at Proto-Fab, which is now Pratt and Miller, which makes Corvettes current race cars!

Long live the Challenge Corvettes. Both in the Corvette Series, and predating that the Escort Series, which set the stage for the Corvette Challenge Series.

if you’re on Facebook, there is a page designated to 1988 and 1989 Corvette challenge series… Check it out, its packed with cool race cars, famous drivers and lots of cool stories!

I am lucky to own two of these special cars, & they are a significant part of my collection, & I actually vintage race one of them!

I race #22, & maybe #5 one day… bought it from a fellow vintage racing bro. Racing a C4 in vintage is a ton of fun. I strongly advise it!

above #22 before the red flanks were added, the car still wears its livery from the 88 season today.

Thank you for sharing! I agree, these are absolutely some of the coolest C4s. I loved watching the Challenge series when it would come on. Nothing but C4s! My dad had an '88 convertible at the time, as well, so we could really relate! I didn't quite understand why the series existed until later, which made it even more significant since nothing else could hang with the mighty C4!

Very cool!!

Mike

I wonder how stock these car were or were not. It would be interesting to know what was done under the hood, to the ignition system and suspension to make them race cars.

I really like your #22 and I totally appreciate the challenge cars. I’d like to own one of these pieces of corvette history one day. The time investment for racing and space for storage are not in the cards for me right now. Once I build a pole barn and my kids are grown things will be different. That’s about 10 years out for the kiddos. Right now we are all over the country playing soccer and going to dance competitions. I drive my current vette about 6-8 times a year, usually to the dance studio for drop off duty LOL.

they were pretty stock.

Engines were all sealed & marked with grease pens. The cars were 20 hp more than a stock car Ive heard.

caged all the same, fire suppression all the same, same race seats.

In 89 they all got exhaust upgrades.

that was the idea, showroom stock race series!

NWould love to k ow more about what series/classes these are able to run in these days.

I’m a drag racer, but it’s fun to fantasize about about road racing one of these.

I race in vintage class. Two organizations. One is SOVREN. That’s local to me in the PNW. The other is SVRA. They race Coast to Coast. There are other groups you can run with. Just need to look them up. Go to your local track and see who races vintage near you. You don’t have to run vintage with a C4, but this car is all about It. The livery is 35 years old!

In 2006 I stored my 96 GS in a barn at the Corvettes of Carsile location for a couple of months till the 10 year reunion. My car was surrounded by Challange cars in that Barn. Very impressive.
