Well I got the old lady back together today from doing a gas tank swap. Must say it wasn’t nearly the PITA I was expecting it to be. Most tedious part is the bumper removal. Once that was out of the way everything went smoothly. I spent more time cleaning everything than I did actually turning wrenches. If anyone has any questions about doing this it’s still fresh in my head.
I cleaned the hell out of everything I could see lol. Also removed the cheap GM plastic wire protector and replaced it with some leftover BMW harness cover I had laying around. The wife couldn’t figure out why I’d make everything look so nice if I’ll never even see it. Because I can damn it! 😆.
Where did you source your new tank from? Your impressions of it? Inquiring minds want to know👍
So apparently there’s a few places that make reproduction tanks. I found one for sale on a Corvette parts site that was coated. Price was ridiculous. Found the same manufacturer on RockAuto. I wasn’t too nutty about it being made in a foreign country 😒…….but it fit perfectly. The suppled bolts for the sending unit were junk. I soaked the factory ones in brake cleaner, then painted the heads with black rust converter. Everything bolted right back up with no fitment issues.
More impressive is that you've done all this in a 1-car garage! Been there and dealt with that.....
It’s definitely not the easiest garage to work in, somehow I’ve managed. Quick Jacks help lol. I had to drop the subframe in my BMW to get to the oil pan gasket. That was definitely the most difficult thing I’ve done that would have been a hell of a lot easier with a bigger garage.

Yeah, I noticed that initially. I tried to zoom in on it but couldn't really see what you used. It looks like good quality stuff.

The tape i used is a high heat harness tape also for BMW/Mercedes. Stuff is fantastic and light years ahead of anything I’ve seen on a GM car. 7 bucks a roll off Amazon. It’s glass cloth based. I always keep a spare roll around.
Hey Face, where about in Wilmington are you located? I’m originally from DE, but been living in the UK since 1990. I’m heading back for a wedding at St. Anthony’s in the new year. My ‘86 convertible before I shipped it to the UK:

I've always liked the St. Anthony's Italian Festival. Didn't go this year, though.
Me neither. One of the few years I've skipped. Was a lot better when I was a kid. Still had a lot of family that lived on or around 4th street. Hell, my grandfather's name is on one of the stained-glass windows of St Anthonys.

My whole family on my mom's side were born, raised and still live in Wilmington. I imagine they've likely crossed paths in life. Especially when St. Anthony's comes into play. Ha.
It is a small world, indeed.
That is pretty cool about your grandfather's name on the stained glass, though.
